Laci Petersen
Whether or not Scott Petersen is innocenct or guilty (and that's for a jury to decide), he IS guilty of the worst public relations mistakes I've ever seen in a high-profile news story. People have argued that people shouldn't ever have to worry about PR when they grieve but that actually scares me even more. Because if he wasn't worried about PR then his actions were normal for him and that's pretty chilling. He acts like the textbook definition of a sociopath. He had to have known he'd eventually become a suspect when over 90% of wife murders are committed by the husband. A little better PR planning would have been in order. Let's see what he did...
1. He sold her car a month after she disappeared and bought HIMSELF a new truck. He says he did it because she hated that car. So if he was expecting her home, why didn't he buy HER a car with the money he got instead of getting himself another car?
2. At the time of his arrest he had dyed his hair, grown a goatee, was within 30 miles of the Mexican border and was carrying his brother's ID and $10,000 in cash. What average Joe carries $10,000 in cash around? Was he planning to go to the Gold Club??
3. He swore to cops that he was a faithful husband, while knowing there were pictures of him and his mistress AND people who knew of their relationship. Then he went to his mistress and asked to buy those pictures back from her. When he went on Good Morning America he lied to Diane Sawyer and said he had been completely forthcoming with cops, then panicked later and called her up trying to change his story.
4. He was seen and photographed laughing at a vigil held for his wife, a couple days after she went missing. In the pictures he's not even half-smiling, he's laughing. Not only is it completely inappropriate to guffaw at a vigil, I'd like to know what he found so amusing two days after his 8-month-pregnant wife goes missing. If my husband ever disappeared (*knock on wood*) I'd be so devastated I wouldn't even be able to talk. What kind of unfeeling prick can giggle and shoot the breeze two days after??
5. After he's told that police had found the decapitated body of a pregnant woman and an infant in the bay that they believed they were the bodies of his wife and child, he decides to... go play golf. Huh??????
So yeah, he may or may not be guilty of murdering her but he is at the very least guilty of being an idiot so they should give him some time for that. Wouldn't that be great? Jailing people for abject stupidity. Yet another reason why it's good there's no such thing as the Riss Regime.
