Last Olympics Post (Boo-Hoo)

Some last Olympic thoughts now that the games are over:

1. Allen Iverson might just be my new favorite player. Thanks Allen for having the balls to say that it should be an honor to represent your country, and that you should have some gratitude towards the sport AND country that made you millions.

2. Okay, the Brazilian marathon runner who got attacked might have been getting tired. His lead had been shrinking. But come on... the guy got attacked by a crazy person in the last few miles. Marathon runners concentrate so hard it doesn't take many powers of deduction to figure out that this messed with his performance. And still he finished only a minute and 19 seconds behind the gold medal winner. So it can be inferred that he had the potential to take the gold, but he was attacked by a psycho and wrestled to the ground for a while, throwing off his concentration and momentum. This is not favoritism in the judging that results in lower scores. This is not a bad call by the refs. This isn't random deductions missed by the judges. This is like Monica getting stabbed. It's not supposed to be part of sports. Brazil has the best case for an official complaint in the entire games. They opened a huge can of worms in Canada during the Winter Olympics. By the way, nice attempt by the IOC to hold off yet another official protest by giving the Brazilian runner that lame ass sportsmanship medal. Like he was really going to say "I was going to file a protest but now I won't because I have this new sportsmanship medal. Who cares if it's not the gold medal. It's really shiny."

3. I totally agree with NBCSports.com "Whine of the Week" about that Bruno guy, but think we should give Tim Duncan a bit of a break. Let's call a spade a spade here. The officiating during the Men's Basketball Olympics games DID suck, if you're a player in a league that actually calls fouls. And sorry but the international game is kind of hard to watch. They run zone all day for defense then hang around the perimeter waiting for a shot on offense. The entire game. It never changes. It's pretty fucking boring.

4. Greece did an awesome job on the Games, but my head was in a hole beforehand because I had no idea people thought they were going to suck. Why? I thought all Olympics turned out pretty good because the countries put so much effort into showcasing their nation with a solid event. Why would the Greeks have been any different? Or was the world just calling them incompetent?

5. American boxing was a disgrace during these Games. Andre Ward rocks though. I also like that British boxer Amir Khan. As in "The Wrath Of."
6. I have no idea who won any of the tennis medals.

7. Am I the only person in the world that doesn't know anything or even care about the women's soccer team? I think I am. The newscasters kept talking about some female players who are retiring or something and I'm sitting there thinking "from what?" Turns out we have a women's soccer league in this country. They also said we had a women's basketball league as well. Funny the things you learn about your country while watching the Olympics.

8. The decathalon is just the craziest event in the history of the Olympic Games. Those athletes are amazing. I get tired just thinking about what they do.

9. Okay if the IOC is considering cutting out some Olympic events, they need to start with rhythmic gymnastics. It's regular floor gymnastics without any tumbling. Um okay. That's like a Philly cheesesteak without steak or cheese. We watched it just for that special "what the fuck is this shit" feeling. It's like the ice dancing of the summer games. Both those events need to get tossed right into the Olympics trash can. Along with "curling." Please God, someone get rid of curling.

10. The closing ceremonies were fun to watch. We all liked seeing the athletes casual and having fun. Some of them had cameras and videocameras and you remember that even though they're world-class athletes who've been worshipped in their homelands or grace the covers of magazines, the whole event is exciting for them too. The Beijing performances were interesting to look at but kind of boring. Sorry. And that little singing girl was cute but sounded scary. Like a little ghost demon girl. We were wondering about the Olympic Flame... Aud and I thought that they keep it lit in between Games, then re-light the torch with it every two years. Although you know it randomly goes out for one reason or another and they light it again and pretend it never happened. But at the closing ceremonies they just put it out, there was no formal saving-of-the-flame-for-Torino. Guess I have a Google mission for today. All in all a pretty nice way to spend a couple of televsion weeks.
