Weekend Stuff
Today, Geo and I braved Walmart to try and get some Christmas shopping done. Our departure was held off a bit by the fact that Ghostbusters was on TV and we got caught up in it, but we made it to the store eventually. Just to let you guys know, Walmart is not much fun when it's filled to capacity. Especially when it's filled to capacity with people who keep running their carts into your heels, people who scream at their children like it's nobody's business and people who like to stop and block the aisle every few feet. Geo has banned any further visits to Walmart from our list of last-minute shopping locations. He has also banned the mall. So if I can't get a person's gift at either Target (which has wider aisles and is filled with less crap) or the grocery store, then that person will not be getting a gift. Just kidding. I'm also allowed to buy Christmas gifts at fast food joints, gas stations and bodegas.
When we got home, the Wizard of Oz was on and I ended up catching the last 20 minutes before I had to tackle the mountain of dishes leftover from last night's dinner party.
Me: So as far as I can recollect, this is my first time watching this movie as an adult. Is it just me or is it a really, really bad movie?
Geo: No, it's pretty bad.
Me: This thing is awful. I can't believe how awful it is. I used to love this movie as a kid.
Geo: Yeah, I know.
Me: God, Dorothy is so fucking annoying. I just want to beat the shit out of her every time she opens her mouth.
Geo: I can't even watch it anymore.
Me: Where's the remote. There isn't a single thing on TV that I wouldn't rather watch.
I felt like a kid who just found out there wasn't any Santa. Every Christmas as a kid, I used to watch The Sound of Music, Yogi's First Christmas and The Wizard of Oz. That's how I knew it was Christmas. Oh well, no more of that. If I ever get an inexplicable craving to see the movie I'll just re-read Gregory Maguire's Wicked which is one of my favorite books AND a much better rendition of the Wizard of Oz story. Which reminds me, I need to toss my Wicked book review up here one day. I wrote it two years ago but it's still saved as a draft for some reason.
Moving on...
"Don we now our gay apparel..." Despite heavy fire this past weekend from some of my more um, fashionably adventurous male friends, I still maintain my stance that hetero men should not wear fur. As with everything in life, there are some exceptions of course. Men who live in conditions so harsh that icicles form on their nosehairs the moment they step outside, can wear fur. Men who don't live in places like Alaska and Siberia, can accomplish the same level of warmth using fleece and a down jacket. And they should. Because let me let you all in on a little secret. Fur jackets and fur-trimmed jackets do not flatter men. The 5th Avenue socialite look does not work well on a guy. Period. End of story. Men should not wear pink or lilac sweaters. Men should not wear thongs. Men should not wear midriffs. Men should not wear denim cutoffs. Men should not wear leather pants. Men should not wear fur. Naturally, none of this applies to cross-dressers.
Moving on...
Last night, Manny, Janelle, Sean, Aris and Lester came up for dinner, to celebrate Janelle and Geo's December birthdays. Afterwards we went to Trust Lounge in the city's meat-packing district. I remember the good old days, when the meat-packing district was where we went to have fun away from the rabid crowds. Now apparently, it's the place to be. And the prices reflect it. Only in New York City would a bar have the audacity to sell you an $8 or $10 drink, and not even give you top shelf liquor. Yeah they all say it's top shelf. A true (former) drinker still knows the difference. The evening was fun, except when some guy tried to molest Janelle in front of me. I pushed him away and told him to step off my girl. Manny owes me a philly cheeseteak for that one. Afterwards we ate Chinese food and they let me order so it was my favorite part of a pretty fun night.
Special thanks to Mike J and Aud (who shares Geo's birthday) for babysitting and Abel for helping them for awhile!
